Rotherham 22-19 Albion

Match report sponsored by Relationships.

Heartbreak at the death denied Plymouth Albion a famous victory at Clifton Lane, as league

leaders Rotherham Titans snatched a dramatic late win in a pulsating National One title clash.

In what had been billed as an “epic” top-of-the-table encounter, with the prize of first place

awaiting the victors, it was the visitors who will feel the most aggrieved after producing a

performance of composure, control and resilience, only to be undone by a last-gasp drop goal.

Played under clear skies and in glorious sunshine, the contest began with a sense of tension

befitting the occasion. Both sides took time to settle, with early exchanges characterised by

cautious kicking and probing phases rather than expansive attacking play. It was Plymouth

Albion who looked the more assured in possession, however, moving the ball with confidence

and showing a willingness to build phases patiently.

That early composure translated into scoreboard pressure. Fly-half Iwan Jenkins opened

Albion’s account with a well-struck penalty, rewarding sustained pressure in the Titans’ half. He

soon doubled the tally with another three-pointer as the visitors continued to dictate territory and

tempo.

Albion’s dominance in the opening 40 minutes was clear. Their forwards carried with intent, their

defence held firm, and their decision-making kept the hosts pinned back. That control eventually

yielded the game’s first try and it came in opportunistic fashion.

A moment of sharp defensive awareness saw Albion charge down a Titans kick deep inside the

home side’s territory. The loose ball was gathered, and quick hands created the space for Joel

Brodhurst to power over, capping an excellent passage of play. Jenkins added the extras, and

Albion had a deserved cushion.

To their credit, Rotherham Titans responded before the break. A period of sustained pressure

finally told as they crossed for a try of their own, reminding Albion of the threat they posed. But

even with that response, it was the visitors who went into half-time with their noses in front,

having been the more cohesive and controlled outfit.

The second half, however, told a different story.

Albion’s dominance at the set-piece began to unravel following injuries to key forwards Dan

Pullinger and Jenson Boughton. Their absence was keenly felt in the scrum, where the Titans

began to exert real pressure. What had been a stable platform in the first half became a source

of difficulty, and Rotherham were quick to capitalise.

A series of scrum penalties handed the initiative to the home side, allowing them to build

territory and momentum. One such infringement proved particularly costly, as Titans turned the

pressure into points to haul themselves back into the contest.

As the game wore on, the physical toll of the encounter became evident. Albion, already

stretched by injuries, were forced into defensive rearguard action, while Rotherham looked to

press home their advantage in the tight exchanges. With the scores locked at 19-19 and tension at its peak, Albion produced one of the moments of

the match. Centre Jack Oulton forced a crucial turnover deep inside his own half, halting a

dangerous Titans attack and providing much-needed relief. It was a moment that encapsulated

Albion’s determination and defensive grit.

Sensing an opportunity for late glory, Albion continued to look for a decisive breakthrough. That

chance appeared to arrive in the closing stages, as a line break opened up space and set

pulses racing among the travelling supporters. But just as it seemed a match-winning score

might be within reach, a knock-on brought the move to an abrupt end.

It proved to be a pivotal moment.

Rotherham, having been under pressure for long spells, showed their experience in the dying

minutes. They absorbed wave after wave of Albion attacks, defending resolutely and waiting for

their opportunity.

That chance came in cruel fashion for the visitors. A turnover, fortuitous from Albion’s

perspective, handed possession back to the Titans in a promising position. With the clock ticking

into the final seconds, the home side kept their composure, setting the ball for a drop goal

attempt.

With the last kick of the game, Rotherham split the uprights from a drop goal, sealing a dramatic

and, for Albion, heartbreaking victory.

The final whistle brought contrasting emotions. For the Titans, jubilation at a win that sends

them to the summit. For Albion, devastation at having come so close to a statement victory on

the road.

Yet despite the result, there is much for Albion to take from the performance. For long periods,

they were the better side, more controlled, more clinical, and more cohesive. Even when

adversity struck in the form of injuries and set-piece struggles, they showed resilience and

character to stay in the fight.

In the context of a fiercely contested National One title race, this may prove to be a significant

moment. But if Albion can replicate this level of performance in the weeks ahead, they will

remain firmly in the hunt.

On another day, the outcome could easily have been different. This time, however, it was

Rotherham who had the final say, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat and leaving Albion to

reflect on what might have been.

It was great to see quick ball to our backs from rucks and scrums for a change. Our slick backs are one of our greatest assets and good to see them being utilised instead of the overused box kick. Our forwards supply a lot of ball and must be so disappointed when it is kicked away to the opposition to find themselves under attack again.
A little bit less appealing and arms up in the air to the referee would be appreciated. Sinjin was a prime example today when he was so busy appealing to the ref that he was swamped by a couple of their players and resulted in a try to them. A wee bit critical but all in all fantastic performance by all of our players including newbies getting a game.

Yes agree, he's been awesome. Reminds me of Ryan Burrows, the way he charges around the field.

Plymouth Albion Edge Rotherham Titans in Dramatic One-Point Victory

In an incredible game of rugby in National League One, Plymouth Albion scraped a one-point victory against top-of-the-league Rotherham Titans in a masterclass of scoreboard management. Despite the hideous conditions at the Brickfields ground, a crowd of 1,939 watched Albion edge the thrilling contest 22-21.

First Half

The opening half was a scrappy affair, with the harsh weather conditions at Brickfields affecting both sides. Albion began the brighter of the two, probing the top-of-the-league Rotherham Titans but failing to land the killer blow, with lineout issues and knock-ons halting promising attacks.

The first points didn’t come until the 13th minute, when Iwan Jenkins slotted a long-range penalty to give Albion a 3-0 lead. Almost immediately after the restart, Rotherham showcased why they are the best in the league, exploiting the blind side off a maul and racing over for a score in the corner, expertly converted by Titans fly-half Lloyd Hayes.

The scrappiness of the affair resumed with both teams conceding a slew of penalties before Rotherham struck again through Isaac Shaw, who collected a cross-field kick to stretch the lead to 3-14. Albion, however, managed to wrestle back momentum in the closing stages of the half, repeatedly turning pressure into points through Jenkins’ reliable boot. His penalties reduced the deficit to 5 at the break, with the Titans leading 14-9.

Second Half

As the second half got underway, it was clear that the half-time message focused on the lack of open-field kicking. Jenkins began to utilise the old faithful up-and-under to good effect in the swirling conditions.

Despite ongoing struggles at their own lineouts, Albion managed to maintain pressure on the Titans throughout the match, forcing them to work hard for every metre. Scrum time proved especially fruitful for Plymouth; despite the Titans’ clear size advantage, they were unable to capitalise on it, with Albion repeatedly winning penalties and free kicks.

Ten minutes into the half, Jenkins added yet another penalty as Rotherham’s discipline began to slip, with offsides and breakdown infringements piling up. Shortly after, Plymouth finally showed their style of running rugby, as a huge break down the left side of the field left a four-on-one and what looked like a certain try. The cover defence of Rotherham managed to stop the attack, but illegally so, as full-back Isaac Price was deemed to have intentionally knocked the ball down and was therefore sent to the sin bin.

Shea Cornish attacking the Rotherham back line

Despite an opportunity to take the three points on offer to retake the lead, Albion were in search of more, kicking to the corner. The ensuing maul failed to make any ground, but a superb flat cross-field kick Captain Jack Oulton was pounced on by Shea Cornish for Plymouth’s first try of the game. The conversion off Jenkins’ boot took the score to 19-14.

Rotherham responded clinically. A penalty which was kicked to the corner set up a driving maul which they managed to bundle over the line, and Hayes’ conversion nudged them back in front by two. A mistake from the restart, which went straight out on the full, threatened to put Albion under more pressure; however, they won yet another free kick off the midfield scrum, which was taken quickly and kicked downfield.

From the lineout, Albion built more consecutive phases than they had managed all game before a booming high ball was sent up and once again claimed in the air by Albion. Titans conceded yet another penalty from the following ruck, gifting Iwan Jenkins the opportunity to restore Plymouth’s lead.

With no time left on the clock, Albion defended ferociously, putting in huge hits on the big men of Rotherham. A searching kick in behind was safely gathered by Albion, who were able to retain possession long enough for Jenkins to send the ball into the Eric Johns stand and secure a famous victory.

Final score: Plymouth Albion 22-21 Rotherham Titans.

Captain Jack Oulton talks to the team after a huge win at Brickfields.

Man of the Match: Jake Clemson

It was a fantastic performance from the flanker, who seemed to be everywhere on the pitch. Reflecting on the win, he credited the team’s preparation:

“We put the work in all week and everything we wanted to do came out on the pitch today.”

Iwan Jenkins, who scored 17 of the team’s points off the tee, put it simply:

“In those situations you’ve got to stick to your process, and that’s what I did, but credit to the rest of the team for putting us in the right position, getting the penalty out of them, and I just follow with my job.

Thanks Winger 14.
It was just a thought seeming that there was a lot of similarities in the refereeing.
Must have been another anti Titans referee.

Who was the referee for this game?
I couldn't make trip to Plymouth this year, but did last year.
The exact same thing happened in that game, the referee gave everything to Plymouth but very little to the Titans.
I was standing next to a Plymouth supporter who could not believe the amount of decisions going against the Titans.
I know it makes no effect on Saturdays result but was just curious?
Unfortunately it's history now and I am still upset at the final result, hard luck guys, great effort away at Plymouth..

We know what is wrong with Povey, JB and Callum,  but what about Lloyd? Glad to see MLB getting a start at centre, long overdue, IMHO.

That's probably the strongest squad of players we have and almost the best 20 players selectable.
What happens to the other 26 players in the squad who are all good players?
